In irezumi (Japanese tattooing), the koi carp is one of the most important motifs. It is one of the five auspicious animals and symbolizes strength, virility, determination, and good luck.

Its fame comes from a legend: a koi that manages to swim up the waterfalls of the Yellow River, at a place called the Dragon Gate, is transformed into a dragon as a reward for its courage.
In tattooing, the carp serves as a reminder to persevere despite difficulties, because those who overcome obstacles receive a great reward.

Momiji (maple leaves) are often seen around the koi to indicate the season in which the story takes place.
It can also be associated with cherry blossoms (Sakura) to represent spring.
If the carp is rising: overcoming obstacles, fighting against the current.
If it is descending: remembering the obstacles overcome, being in harmony with one's environment.

And you, where is your inner koi?
